Spanish ImpressionismLuminismPlein Air
Artist Statement

"I do not paint sadness. I believe only in light."

Practice
Sorolla was the supreme luminista painter — capturing Mediterranean light on water, bodies, and white fabric through direct plein-air observation. His breakthrough, Sad Inheritance, won the Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle. His 1909 solo exhibition at the Hispanic Society of America drew 160,000 visitors and led to a portrait commission from President Taft. His magnum opus is the Vision of Spain mural cycle (14 panels, 227m²) for Archer Huntington. He left over 2,000 works; the Museo Sorolla in Madrid — his former studio home — holds the largest collection.

Figurative PaintingFauvismSelf-Portrait
Artist Statement

"Naturally, I was very attracted by the cliché and idealistic representation of the female body — like so many posted on Instagram. I wanted to counter that with something more truthful: the forgotten forms of flesh."

Practice
Figurative painting in the Fauvist tradition — fragmented female forms (hands, cheekbones, eyelids) as a counter to idealised social media imagery. Her exploration of light variation, skin tone, and shadow reclaims the body on her own terms. She built an early following online before formalising her position through representation with Almine Rech and a Rizzoli monograph. Key influences: Picasso, Rodin, and Camille Claudel.

Artist Statement

"We are interested in the gap between what we are told life should be and what it actually is — the young people we paint occupy that gap."

Practice
Large-scale figurative paintings sourced from magazines and social media, recomposed as Renaissance-style group portraits with text overlays from literature, philosophy, and advertising. Figures occupy airports, malls, hotels — anonymous transit spaces — staring at phones or into the middle distance. The subject is existential ambivalence: the gap between what life is and what it is supposed to be. The practice extends into video, installation, sculpture, and drawing. Collections: MoMA, Albertina (Vienna), Rubell Family Collection (Miami).

Artist Statement

"Every space has a voice — a resonant frequency that has existed since the moment it was formed. My work is about finding that voice and making it audible."

Practice
Trained in music composition in London, fine art at Oxford's Ruskin School, and film theory at the Sorbonne — the intersection of sound, space, and architecture defines the practice. ① Resonance Project: identifies and amplifies each site's unique resonant frequency through voice, from the Centre Pompidou to Istanbul hammams to Palaeolithic caves. ② Resonance Paintings: dry pigments placed on canvas over loudspeakers, vibrated into Chladni-pattern formations — sound made visible. ③ Resonance Project: The Cave (Lyon Biennale, 2024): eight singers including Rufus Wainwright and Woodkid recorded their earliest musical memories inside Dordogne's Font-de-Gaume cave — critics called it 'without doubt the climax of the Biennale.'

Oh Myocho investigates the illusions generated by new technology and the possibilities concealed beneath them. Her sculptures blend natural materials — pine resin, aquatic plants, mushrooms — with synthetic ones, building a visual language that moves fluidly between the natural and artificial. Major works: Barrel Eye (VR video + sculpture, 2022), Jumbo Shrimp (2021), Taxidermia. She also authored the omnibus novel Traces of Things That Will Not Be Mentioned (2018). Artist Statement

"I'm interested in what it means to be a body in relation to other bodies — bacterial, machine, animal — and how smell, which carries both memory and immune information, can be a medium for thinking about those relationships."

Practice
대표작: 〈7,070,430K of Digital Spit〉(박테리아로 그린 캔버스 회화, 2015), 〈In Love With The World〉(테이트 모던 터빈홀 현대자동차 커미션, 2021 — AI로 조종되는 생체형 기계 '에어로브'들이 공간을 부유), 켈프 조각 연작.
Yi works with insects, bacteria, AI, and scent to explore the political and gendered history of smell and the relationships between organisms and machines. The studio functions as a laboratory; biologists and chemists are central collaborators. She began making art seriously in her mid-thirties, debuting at 47 Canal, New York in 2011. Key works: 7,070,430K of Digital Spit (bacterial paintings, 2015) and In Love With The World (Tate Modern Turbine Hall Hyundai Commission, 2021) — AI-piloted biomorphic 'aerobes' floating through the hall in response to their environment.

Artist Statement

"My paintings explore place as both a physical environment and an emotional state that transcends time and geographical boundaries — combining memory with archival images to create spaces that teeter on the edge of reality and dream."

Practice
Pooley treats place as both a physical environment and an emotional state that transcends time — combining personal memory with archival images to produce landscapes existing between reality and dream. The tension between specific detail and abstraction complicates questions of nostalgia, origin, and identity. Her childhood in the Araucanía region — shaped by the long conflict between the Mapuche people and the Chilean government — underlies the work throughout. "Art is not a thing, it is a relation — between the work, the viewer, and the context. My interest lies in the act of perceiving: what it means to experience space, light, and movement, and what it tells us about how we see the world."

Practice
Eliasson uses natural phenomena — light, wind, water, moss, rainbows — not as subjects but as active materials. His work operates at the intersection of perception, embodiment, and the climate crisis. Studio Olafur Eliasson in Berlin is a collective of around 100 craftspeople, architects, scientists, and artists. Major works: The Weather Project (Tate Modern, 2003 — an artificial sun from 2,000 bulbs, approximately two million visitors); Beauty (1993 — an indoor rainbow from spotlights, water, and mist); Ice Watch (glacial ice transported from Greenland to city squares). He also developed Little Sun, an open-source solar light for communities without electricity.

Artist Statement

"The walls between art and engineering exist only in our minds. I am trying to create new forms of life: not in a petri dish, but on the beach, from plastic tubes and the wind."

Practice
Strandbeest (beach animal) — kinetic sculptures from PVC tubing, cable ties, and plastic bottles, powered only by wind. A 35-year solo evolution project compressing the logic of natural selection into art practice. Each spring a new species is released; each autumn it is retired to the boneyard. Each generation is improved: more efficient at walking, storing energy, sensing the environment. He has worked on the North Sea coast since 1990. Mass recognition through Honda and BMW campaigns. He operates without a gallery, through foundation and corporate patronage.

Artist Statement

"I feel colours in words — mainly in certain letters. That's why I work with colour in an emotional manner. It is a language of my own."

Practice
Colour-field painting in acrylic and pencil, originating in synaesthesia — Quiñonero experiences colour in words and individual letters. Recent work has evolved to include silhouettes emerging gradually from the surface, and crochet combined with painting. She describes herself as 'a painter who writes and knits to impose order on the void.' Work titles come from everyday mantras and music. Exhibiting since 2003.
